JULY Ride of the Month – Marathon Loop

DCIM100SPORT

Marathon summit

Marathon Loop – a great intermediate ride with a logging road climb and a fast and flowing descent finished off with a nice section of cross-country.  You won’t want to miss the views from the Gibraltar Bluffs or the Toquenatch Fir, one of the largest old growth trees in the region.

Here’s a suggestion on how to do the ride:  Head north of town on Highway 101.  Turn right onto Wilde Rd.  At the ‘Y’ stay left on Wilde and park at the end of the street.  From here hop on your bike and head back down Wilde Rd, and at the ‘Y’ intersection turn left and go through the small hamlet of houses (you are now on Tomkinson Rd).  Ride along Tomkinson until you reach Theodosia Branch 10, then turn left.  This is the start of a 3.2km gravel road climb, it’s a bit of a grind but definitely worth it!

As the road levels out keep an eye out for SCT trail markers signs.  Turn left onto the trail (directly across from the trail to Rivley’s pond) and head out to Gibraltar Lookout.  From the Gibraltar Lookout the trail returns into the woods and flows all the way down to Theodosia (Okeover) Branch 2.

At the bottom of the trail cross the road and tuck back into the trees to ride ‘Ten Bridges’ another section of the SCT that takes you past the Toquenatch Fir.  Not too far past the big tree, watch out for a short trail on your left that will bring you back out to an old spur road.  Turn left and you will join back up with Theodosia (Okeover) Branch 2.  Carry along until you reach Southview Rd (you should notice power lines crossing the road).  Head straight into the bushes here onto the Wilde Creek Loop trail which takes you right back to your vehicle parked at the end of Wilde Rd.
